Data Erasure

Table of Contents

Data erasure is the part of IT asset disposition that removes all data from a device while keeping the hardware usable. WMG Waste eRecycling wipes drives in computers, laptops, servers and phones using NIST 800-88 compliant methods, then issues a certificate of data destruction for every device, logged by serial number, so the equipment can be reused or resold safely.

What is the difference between erasing, formatting and destroying?

Deleting files or formatting a drive only removes the pointers to data. The data itself usually stays on the disk and can be recovered with freely available tools. Proper erasure overwrites or cryptographically clears every addressable area so the data cannot be read back. Physical destruction, by shredding or crushing, makes the drive itself unusable.

Erasure is the better choice when a device still has value, because a wiped laptop or server can be refurbished and sold. Destruction is the right choice for drives that are faulty, fail verification or fall under a policy that forbids reuse.

What does NIST 800-88 actually require?

NIST Special Publication 800-88 is a widely used guideline for media sanitization. It describes three levels:

  • Clear: overwriting user-addressable storage, suitable for many hard disk drives.
  • Purge: methods such as firmware-based secure erase or cryptographic erase, which also reach areas that normal overwriting can miss. This matters for SSDs, which keep spare blocks hidden from the operating system.
  • Destroy: physical destruction, so the media can never be used again.

The right level depends on the storage type and how sensitive the data is. Following the guideline gives you a recognized, documented method to point to in an audit.

How does WMG run the erasure process?

We collect the equipment and give you an itemized receipt. Each device is logged by serial number and tracked from collection to final processing. Drives are wiped with NIST 800-88 compliant methods, on-site at your premises or off-site. Any drive that cannot be wiped is shredded or crushed instead. Wiped devices move on to refurbishment and resale through our IT asset recovery service, with the proceeds returned to you, and the rest goes to WEEELABEX certified recycling.

What do you receive as proof?

A certificate of data destruction for every device, listing its serial number. Together with the collection receipt and the recycling report, it forms the evidence trail you need for GDPR accountability. For the full picture of how erasure fits into disposal, see our IT asset disposition overview.
