Laptops from a refresh cycle often have a second life ahead of them. Through buyback of laptops, WMG Waste eRecycling values your used business notebooks, wipes or destroys their storage with a certificate per device, resells the ones the refurbished market wants and returns the proceeds to you. Laptops without resale value are recycled in the same collection.
Which details change what a used laptop is worth?
Buyers of refurbished laptops look closely at a few things, and so do we when we value a batch:
- Type and model: business ranges and ultrabooks tend to be in more demand than consumer models
- Age and specification: processor, memory and storage size decide who can still use the machine
- Condition: screen, keyboard, hinges, casing and battery health all matter
- Completeness: chargers included make a laptop easier to resell
- Account locks: BIOS passwords or devices still enrolled in management software cannot be set up by a new owner
- Quantity and demand: larger batches of the same model, and current demand for refurbished hardware, both play a part
What should your list include for a valuation?
Your device management console or asset register usually has everything we need. Send a rough list with the brand and model, the approximate purchase year range or age, the number of units, and a short note on condition, for example “20 in good shape, 5 with cracked screens”. Say whether chargers are included. We reply to quote requests within 24 hours.
How is company data removed before resale?
Every laptop is wiped with NIST 800-88 compliant methods before it is resold. Because most laptops now use SSDs, this matters: if erasure fails on a drive, its storage is physically destroyed and the laptop is either resold without it or recycled. Each device appears on a certificate of data destruction with its serial number. The data erasure page explains the process.
Before collection, remove the laptops from your device management system and company accounts. This avoids them being blocked for the next user and keeps their value.
What happens to broken or outdated laptops?
They go into WEEELABEX certified recycling in the same pickup. That includes their lithium batteries, which are a fire risk in general waste, and we recover up to 95% of materials. See laptop recycling for details.
