WEEE Compliance

WEEE compliance means disposing of electrical and electronic equipment in the way the EU WEEE Directive and Dutch law require: separately from other waste, through qualified processors, with records that show where it went. WMG Waste eRecycling supports businesses with WEEELABEX certified recycling and the documents you need when an auditor asks for evidence.

What does the WEEE Directive ask of businesses?

The WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) was introduced to keep electronics out of landfill and incineration and to recover the materials inside them. Producers carry the main financing obligations, but businesses that dispose of equipment have responsibilities too. In practice, that means:

  • keeping e-waste separate from general and residual waste
  • handing it to a collector or processor that treats it according to the rules
  • making sure hazardous parts, such as batteries, refrigerants and certain screens, are removed and treated properly
  • being able to show what was disposed of, when and by whom

Our article on WEEE compliance requirements for Dutch businesses covers the national details.

Where do businesses usually fall short?

Rarely through bad intent. More often, old equipment disappears through informal routes: a staff member takes it home, a scrap dealer collects it without paperwork, or monitors end up in a bulky waste container. None of that leaves a record. The gap only becomes visible when an auditor, customer or sustainability report asks what happened to the equipment.

How do WMG’s documents support your WEEE records?

Every collection produces a paper trail you can file:

  • Itemized receipt at pickup, listing what left your premises.
  • Chain of custody records, with every item tracked from collection to final processing.
  • Certificates of data destruction for every data-bearing device, logged by serial number, which also support your GDPR records.
  • Recycling report after processing, showing how the material was handled through WEEELABEX certified recycling.

Behind those documents, we recover up to 95% of materials, work towards zero landfill and follow ISO 14001 for environmental management. For background on the recycling standard itself, see our page on certified recycling.

Every data-bearing device is wiped to NIST 800-88 or physically destroyed before it is resold or recycled. Each device is logged by serial number and covered by a certificate of data destruction.

Yes. We collect servers, racks, switches, routers and storage systems, including full server room and data center decommissions, and log every asset by serial number.

Often, yes. Working equipment that is not too old is refurbished and resold through our remarketing program, and the proceeds go back to your organization. The rest is recycled.
